Back To The Future

This weeks thought piece was inspired by my recent family trip to see Back To The Future: The Musical

If you’re hearing the phrase “Back to the Future” and picturing a DeLorean reaching 88mph to travel through time, congratulations—your pop culture memory is still intact! But in this week’s exclusive thought piece, I'm going to put a new spin on the idea.

Because when it comes to retirement, the best way to approach it isn’t by focusing on what you’re leaving behind.

Instead, it’s about setting the coordinates for the future you want to move toward.

Think about it. Retirement is often framed as an escape: escape from work, from deadlines, from meetings that should have been emails. But isn’t that just the beginning? After all, when Doc Brown fired up the DeLorean, he wasn’t just running away from the present. He was propelling himself toward an adventure—new possibilities, new discoveries, and yes, a bit of the unknown.

Why shouldn’t your retirement feel the same way?

Here’s a fun exercise to jump start your own “Great Scott!” moment:

A much as I would love to go 'back to the future' to leave myself the Grays Sports Almanac... 😆

...I want you to pretend you’re sending a postcard to your future self.

What do you want to write about? “Wish you were here” loses its charm when it’s addressed to you.

So maybe instead you’d say, “Living my dream of running a beachside café.”

Or “Finally climbed Machu Picchu!” Or even just “Spending lazy afternoons painting and sipping coffee.”

The point is, the best retirements aren’t defined by an absence of something (like work). They’re fuelled by the presence of purpose now and in the future. Ask yourself these questions...

👉 What lights you up?

👉 What are the things you’ve always wanted to do but never had the time for?

Retirement is your chance to build the life you’ve always imagined. A life that you want to move towards

(No flux capacitor with 1.21 gigawatts of electricity required)

Of course, this all sounds fun and inspirational, but it takes some practical planning.

Whether it’s learning a new skill, taking that dream trip, or starting a passion project, the future doesn’t build itself. Just like Marty McFly needed a plan (and a little help from Doc), you’ll need to map out your own path.

So, here’s your call to action for the week:

Stop thinking about what you’re retiring from, and start dreaming about what you’re retiring to. Take 15 minutes, grab a piece of paper, and jot down three things you’re excited to do in the next year. It doesn’t matter if they’re big or small. What matters is that they’re yours.

Retirement isn’t the end of the road—it’s the open highway. And you’re in the driver’s seat. So go ahead: make sure the flux capacitor has 1.21 gigawatts of electricity, hit the gas and get to 88mph, set the time circuits, and create a future that’ll make you say, “Great Scott!”
